The chart below shows the percentage of total US population aged 65 and over between 1900 and 2000.
The chart gives information about the proportion of people who were 65 years old and above during the period of one century from 1900 to 2000.
Overall, there were general upward trends in the percentage of American senior citizens. It is also clear that the population of those at the age of 65 to 74 was by far higher than the other two groups.
In general, the proportion of the elderly in the United States increased nearly threefold over the given period, from 4.1% in 1900 to 12.4% in 2000.
In 1900, 2.9% of the total population was aged 65 to 74, followed by a noticeable increase to 6.1% in both 1960 and 1970. Afterwards, the figure for this age group continued to rise slightly to 7.3 % before experiencing a slow fall to 6.5 in 2000.
In comparison, the percentages of British people in the 75-84 and 85 and over age group remained almost the same in the first three decades. After that, these two groups went up continually to hit their highest points of 4.4% and 1.5% respectively.
