The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

Given is a graph comparing the percentage of the people aged 65 and above in three different countries over a period of 100 years.

It is evident from the information supplied that the proportion of elderly people in overall three countries had increased from 1940 to 2020. Also noticeable is the fact that the percentage of those who aged 65 and above in the given countries will still rise in the next 20 years.

In 1940, the American elderly people accounted for almost 10% of the country’s population, whereas the figure for Sweden and Japan were nearly 7% and 5% separately. The year 1980 saw a similar increase in the population of American and Swedish elderly people, climbing by over 5% each. By contrast, Japan had seen a contrary trend during the same period.

The following 20-year period is expected to see the population of the elderly people soar sharply, especially in Japan, which figure will rocket by almost 17% of its population. A same trend will be seen in Sweden and America as well, whereas the change is not as dramatic as in Japan, by 8% separately.
