The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table illustrates the number of male and female workers as well as factories in the course of 50 years, starting in 1851.
Overall, it can be seen that employee rate experienced a downward trend over the period shown but the opposite was true for the figures for factories. It is also noticeable that total employees was the highest in 1851 whereas the number of factories was the lowest in the same year.
In 1851, male and female staffs were 287100 and 190000 respectively. Both of these figures fall gradually from 1861 to 1901. The numbers significantly dropped to 31000 and 30000 at the end of the period and the differences in the male group was more dramatic than the female one.
Regarding the number of factories that underwent an upward trend in general. The initial number was 225 in 1851, after which it reached a peak of 721 in 1881 before having a fluctuation in the next ten years. This figure plunged by 96 and continue to fall to 600 in the last year.
