Summarize the points made in the lecture being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
Both the reading and lecture are about TED (turtle excluder device). While the reading passage states that in order to not caught turtles in nets of shrimp fishing boats TED should be used so the turtles can escape. The professor in his argument provides solutions or consequences to each of the problems mentioned in the article.
First and foremost, the reading states that turtles are rarely trapped by shrimpers. The professor solved this problem by explaining that there are thousands of boats on the United States coast that leave the coast to catch shrimps. Furthermore, if only 1 turtle is trapped per month it means 10 per year and it is a huge problem. The species of endangered turtles already have a low population that is why it is a big threat t to their population. Therefore, the professor provides a remedy to this problem.
Secondly, the text outlines that there are numerous alternative methods to protect the turtle. However, the professor mentions that the time limit can not be applied. It is effective only in theory it is impossible because there are many boats which government can not monitor or check the time on a daily basis. Moreover, it is easy to check when any boat leaves the coast it must have TED. Hence, the lecturer solved this problem.
Finally, the writer outlines that, TED is not for larger species. Nevertheless, the professor posits that the design of TEd can be modified without changing its function. As the endangered species are large and already have a little population it is necessary to protect them or they become extinct. Thus, the professor provides a long-lasting solution to this point.
It is quite visible that the author and the lecturer having trouble in finding a common ground on this issue.
