The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much
The three pie charts illustrate the mean proportion of three nutrients (sodium, saturated fat and added sugar), which are known to be unhealthy if consumed excessively, in the typical meal eaten in the USA.
Overall, breakfast and lunch contain a smaller share of the three nutrients while dinner and snacks are majorly made up of these nutrients in larger percentages.
Breakfast, being the first meal of the day, has the least proportions of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar at 14%, 16% and 16% respectively. For lunch, almost a third of the meal is sodium while roughly half of the meal consists of saturated fat and added sugar combined.
Of the four regular meals, dinner has the highest proportions of all the three nutrients. More than two-fifths are sodium, 37% is fat and 23% is added sugar. Interestingly, snacks contain the largest percentage of sugar at 42% out of the meal types. Finally, it is worthy of note that dinner and snacks both have the highest percentage of these nutrients which might make these meals unhealthy.
