The article states that there are three theories could explain the uses of the Chaco Canyon buildings in the old days and provides many reasons of support. However, the professor explains that none of the arguments are convincing and refutes each of the Author’s reasons.
First, the reading claims that Chaco structure were purely residential. The professor opposes this point by stating that it is true the structure from outside look like there are many stairs as we have today in apartment complex, but the inside structure cast doubt on being a residential place. According to the professor, there were only few fire places comparing to the large size, and the fire places needed to make food by each family. Second, the article asserts that the Chaco structure were used to store food supplies. On the other hand, the professor contends that if these buildings used for storing foods like maize as the article mentioned, we would find some big containers left over there or some maize left on the ground.
Third, the reading posits that these houses used as ceremonial centers. The professor refutes this point by saying that there are no supported evidence support the theory of that the Chaco buildings were a ceremonial place. According to the professor, the materials found in the nearby place contain other stuff the Author didn’t mention in his article, like, sand, stones, and construction tools. He adds that these stuffs prove that the other place was a trash place contains many things left over from the main building.
