Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific solutions proposed in the reading passage.
The golden frog that lives in and around mountain streams in Panama is severely endangered by a fungus, which inhibits thefrog's life functions. Conservationists have proposed three solutions to the problem, but the lecturer says none of the solutionswill be effective to solve the problem.
First, it is proposed that a type of bacterium may be introduced to the skin of the golden frogs to kill fungal cells. However, theprofessor says that the bacterium did not last long after introduction to frog skin, and therefore the protection was only temporary. Also, the bacterium only produces the chemical that kills the fungal cell in the early stage of its colonization. The bacterium nolonger produces the chemical shortly after that initial stage and the protection stops.
Second, it is proposed to breed the golden frog in captivity and then release these fungus-free frogs to the wild to supplementfrog population. However, the professor says the released fungus-free frogs will not stay healthy once they are released to thewild because other animals living in the wild also carry the same fungus. The newly released frogs will get infected quickly oncethey come into contact with the fungus-carrying animals.
Third, the reading passage suggests that some golden frogs increase their body temperature after infection. If this naturaldefense spreads to the entire frog population, then crisis can be overcome. However, the professor challenges this by pointingout a big problem. In order to raise the body temperature, frogs have to expend a lot of energy and they are weakened as aresult.Weakened frogs can get sick easily or die for other reasons. They might be protected from the fungus but they are notstrong and healthy anymore.
