The chart below gives information about the age of women in Australia when they gave birth to their first child in 1966, 1986, and 2006.
The chart compares the proportion of different ages of Australian women with their first-time pregnancies in 1966, 1986, and 2006.
It is clear that the percentage of women over 40 was the most modest among the six age groups. Furthermore, while the data for women giving birth to their first child from 25 to over 40 showed an upward trend, the figures for the age groups under 19 and 19-24 experienced a downward trend.
Starting at nearly 35% in 1966, the data for the women under 19 witnessed a decrease to just above one-tenth of the total proportion in 2006. Likewise, a similar pattern for females aged between 19 and 24 was the highest figure in 1966 (around 63%) followed by a fall of 26% in 1986 and dropped to just under 39% at the end of this period.
A similar pattern is observed in the changes of data for the 30-34 and 34-39 age groups during this period, which increased to around 45% and 30% in 2006 respectively. There were also slightly more women over 40 giving birth to their first child over the years, while the data for women aged 25-30 experienced a fluctuation, rising from around 35% in 1966 to 50% in 1986 before a drop to just under 40% at the end of the period.
