Essay topics:

A good friend has just changed schools and is having difficulty fitting in and needs your advice.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

• make suggestions as to how they could make friends

• suggest joining clubs, participating in school activities

• give any extra general advice

Dear Lily,

It's quite surprising for me to hear that you changed to a new school three days ago. Anyway, I'm writing in response to your letter requesting some advice as you're in hot water with fitting in.

Firstly, I believe that the best course of action would be striking up a new friendship with a classmate. This will help you to break the ice and gain more confidence. I bet it'll be no longer hazardous for you to blend in.

Secondly, it's a good idea to be a member of a school club. I would strongly suggest that you write an application form to a club whose major is right in your backyard. Your participation not only provides you with easier access to be used to the new environment but also equips you with a backlog of skills, which will be advantageous in the future.

Last but not least, I'd like to offer one suggestion that from my perspective, may do you good. During the lessons, be confident to raise your hands to voice your own opinions about the lesson topic if the teachers permit on the grounds that you'll both understand the lesson and make yourself familiar with your new surrounding.

I hope that these suggestions will be of some assistance. Don't hesitate to contact me should you have any further problems. I'll always be by your side, lend you a sympathetic ear and give you useful counsel.

Best wishes
