The chart below shows the percentage of people born in and outside of Australia living in cities, towns, and rural areas in 1950 and 2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features of the graph and make comparisons where relevant.
The charts compare the percentages of Australian-born and non-Australian-born according to where they lived during the years from 1995 to 2010. As can be clearly seen, the majority of people, whether they were born in or outside the country, lived in metropolises, and this number increased over the period. Meanwhile, the figures for those settling down in towns and rural areas saw an adverse trend.
Regarding the percentage of people who were born in Australia, approximately half of its population lived in cities, which is 20% higher than the figure for villagers and more than doubled the number of those in towns, at 20%. By 2010, the proportion of city dwellers witnessed an upward trend, increasing by 15% to a high of 65%. This led to the decline in the number of the others, which dropped steadily to an equal number of 15%.
The number of Australians born overseas saw an identical pattern when the statistic on urban inhabitants rose substantially by 20% to peak at 80% in 2010. This exceeded the percentage of those dwelled in villages which plummeted to only 5% by the end of the period.
