The article discusses the Marco polo’s travel book and doubts its validity claiming that most of the events mentioned are made up. Although, the professor here contradicts it saying the travelog was made 20 years after the travel. So, there can be some mistakes but major of the events described are true.
First, the author proposes that Marco polo mentioned his close relationship with the Kublai khan, then ruler of Mongolian empire, but his governor position was not mentioned in any of their historical records. The professor believes that there are flaws in the author’s position. He contends that Marco polo’s position is misinterpreted by the English writer as he was in the ambassador position that was give to a number of people. So, his job was not worthy enough to be described in the historical texts and records.
According to writer, if he had gone to China, there would have been description of the great wall of China in his book. As it would definitely catch any traveler’s eye. The speaker, on the other hand, points out great wall of China was only made half century after Marco’s visit to guard the entry of their enemies. So, at that period of time it may be in despair or in the process of construction. So, it may not have been written in Marco’s book.
Also, the reading passage notes that Francis wood’s book mentioned the most of the Paolo’s events of the book are derived from the local libraries or from the travelers who visited Asia in the past. The professor rebuts this argument. He mentions that wood’s book also lacks validity as it has no evidence. Furthermore, the Paolo’s book has mentioned some churches of China during his visit which was nowhere mentioned in any historical records. And the archeology confirmed the existence of those churches in those areas.
In conclusion, the author and speaker have different views regarding the Marco Paolo’s travel book to China.
