The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph displays the monthly fluctuations in copper, nickel, and zinc prices for the year 2014. Overall, there was a significant decline in the price of nickel and copper, especially nickel while zinc showed a moderate rise.
The percentage change in nickel in January 2014 was 6%, which was significantly larger than the changes in copper (2%) and zinc (1%). In the case of nickel, this trend reverted, with percentage changes falling to 1% by March and a low of -3% by June. With the exception of zinc, which saw a peak of 3% in February and a subsequent decrease trend for the remaining half of the year, the divergences for the other minerals were more mild. Similar drops in copper prices were seen, they were concentrated at a much smaller range of 1% to -1%.
Nickel production fell by -1% in the majority of the second half of the year and then sharply increased to end the year with 1% increases. Conversely, from July onward, copper remained close to 1%, with a minor increase in December. For most of the later half of the year, zinc prices dropped by 0.5%, but in December, their overall price had a rise that reached 2%, the greatest closing point for all mineral prices.
