The given bar chart depicts data on the changes in average house prices in five different cities, over a 12-year period, namely between 1990 and 2002. The figures are compared with the average house prices in 1989.
Looking at the figures recorded between 1990 and 1995, it can be observed that there were slight increases in the average house prices in Madrid and Frankfurt, by approximately 1% and 2% respectively. Conversely, the average house prices in the other three cities significantly decreased. In Tokyo and London the prices went down by about 7%, whereas in New York by 2 percentage points less.
Between 1996 and 2002, in every city except Frankfurt, the average house prices showed an upward trend. One thing that stands out in the chart is that the prices in London rose by nearly 12%. This comes in sharp contrast with the average house prices in New York, where the figure increased by 5%, in Madrid it went up by about 3% and in Frankfurt it rose by a mere 1%. The prices in Tokyo declined by 5%, not as dramatic as between 1990 and 1995.
To sum up, it is clear that the average house prices were generally higher between 1996 and 2002 and lower between 1990 and 1995, than in 1989.
