Both the reading and the lecture try to discuss some solutions that are mentioned the reading passage in order to prevent birds' injuries when they fly into buildings with walls made up of glass. While the reading brings some solutions to this issue, and believes that they are beneficial in order to reduce these injuries, the lecturer finds all these solutions dubious and brings some evidence to refute them all.
First, the readings argues that responsible businesses can replace regular glass with one-way glass that is not completely transparent; only one side of these glass is transparent; therefore,although people can see outside, birds cannot see through a window; as a result, they wont fly through it to become injured. On the contrary, the lecturer plays up with the idea that these one-way glasses act like a mirror for birds. Birds do not understand what mirror is; inaddition, they think every thing in the mirror, like the sky, is the real form of that thing, so this solution will not work.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that by painting lines or designs on the glass, not only can people see outside through the openings in the design, but also birds will avoid flying through these glasses. In contrast, the speaker brings up the idea that birds think that unpainted spaces are holes, so they try to fly through them. If the painters paint most of the space and leave small areas so that birds cannot fly through them, then people are not able to see outside because of the dark glass.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that by creating an artificial magnetic field, people can guide birds in the right path. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this idea due to the fact that although birds have an ability to sense magnetic fields, which is used by birds to migrate long distances, they cannot use the signals sent by these fields in order to find the right way in short distances, so this solution is also irrelevant and useless.
