The lecture disproves what is mentioned in the reading material. According to the passage, some critics rebut the idea that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur for three reasons. The professor talks about the same issue. However, she thinks the fine lines surrounding the bones is strong evidence to believe Sinosauropteryx has feather. Then she represented three details to demonstrate her idea.
For one thing, while the passage mentions that the fine lines can be the decomposed skin of the dinosaur, the professor insists that this is not the case. Because other dinosour fossils besides the Sinosauropteryx show that skin tissues are preserved in good condition, thus the line struction cannot be decomposed skin.
Moreover, contrary to the idea that the lines are likely to be fossiled remains of frills, the professor asserts that they are not frills but feather. Based on a chemical testing, a kind of protein in frills and feathers is different, and the test result indicates that the protein in the lines belong to feather.
Finally, the passage claims that the lines located on the backbone and tail of the dinosaur have no functions, since they can not help the animal to fly. However, the professor rebuts this by saying that these structures can have other uses. For instance, some birds use their colorful feathers of tail to mate, which is called "display function". And tests have illustrated that the fine lines of the animal is orange and white, which is colorful. Thus the dinosaurs can use the feather to do display function rather than fly.
