Both the reading and the lecture try to discuss the posibility of stopping the Zebra mussels' invasion in parts of North America and the serious threat they become for inhabitants over there. While the reading states that these creatures' conquest is unstoppable ,and they are dangerous for freash waterfishes in the North America waters, by enumerating some theories, the lecturers finds all the ideas mentioned by the author dubious and brings some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading passage argues that these marine creatures can stick to the bottom of a ship and survive all the long path to other reigons. They spread to the whole Europe earlier with this trend, therefore, they can easily be carried to the east coast of North America too. On the other hand the lecturer bring the fact that there are some ways to get rid of these creatures. If ships empty their their ballast waters and refill it with the ocean water, the salty water will kill these marine creatures, thus they cannot spread out in the American waters.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that these animals can stand a variety of harsh conditions. They also do not have a predator which helps them dominate their habitats. In contrast, the professor plays up the idea that they are dominant in their habitat only at the beginning of their invasion. After some time, local birds change their habits and find these creatures a great source of food. They quickly exploit them and eat a lot of them which reduce their population and dominance drastically.
Last but not least, the author asserts that the Zebra mussels cause a decline in the fresh waterfish population in the place they become dominant due to the fact that they eat planktons that is the main source of food for these fishes. On contrary, the professor dismisses this idea owing to the truth that although the Zebra mussels may have a bad impact on some fishes, they may also make a good impression on some ther fish populations in their habitats. They eat planktons but produce some food for the fishes that live in bottoms parts of the ocean, as a result, their population tends to increase.
