The professor explains three clear arguments opposing the points stated in the reading passage about the plausible explanations of Triassic mass-extinction in 200 million years ago which caused dinosaurs became major species in the world for about 145 million years.
First, the professor argues that sea levels in coastal and shallow oceans were fluctuated regularly and those were adapted to such changes. So, if sea levels' decline was major reason for extinction, it would change suddenly because sea levels were went down about several million years.
Second, it is mentioned in the reading passage that sulfur dioxide, which emitted through volcanic activities, could cause global temperature fall down, therefore, destroyed many creatures, organisms and species that established the massive extinction. On the contrary, the professor draws that SO2 can change temperature but its impact is not permanent and sulfur dioxide's effect is sustain for only limited period of time. Furthermore, sulfur dioxide usually combine with water and vapor can fall back to the Earth as rain. Thus, it couldn't be major reason for extinction.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that an asteroid hit to the Earth's surface, which cause rocks crush, spread a huge amount of soil to the atmosphere and makes a crater, prevents sunlight to reach surface. So, many plants and animals died due to lack of energy and food. In contrast, the professor disproves the idea because of the fact that very few scientists were accept it. They couldn't find any reliable evidence of an asteroid crater belongs to that period of time. The only crater, which they have found, is related to 12 millions years before Triassic massive-extinction that is too far to consider its impact.
