Both the reading and lecture are about a marine animal which was called Steller's see. This poor animal was living in the coast of Siberia; however, now this species has been extinct. The reading provides three theories for Steller's see's extinction and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of them unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that native people who was living in Siberia may have hunt Steller's sees in a large number to supply their needed food. This point is rebutted by the professor. He points out that this marine animal was in a huge mass with 9 meter height and a large weight; hence, humans from this island did not need to hunt all of them. Since the population of this village was low; consequently, one of Steller's sees could be enough for several months.
Secondly, the reading contends that there is a possibility that ecosystem disturbance may have played a crucial role in this frustrating phenomenon. With such an event, the main food resource of Steller's see could disappear such as kelp which was a type of marine plant; conversely, the professor believes that if there was such a change in ecosystem, it had to affect other marine animals like whales; however, such a document has not been reported by people.
Finally, the reading passage states that fur traders from Europe who had enough weapons could catch a large number of Steller's sees for their goal and kill them quickly. This argument is challenged by the professor again. The lecturer proposes that when European traders arrived to the mentioned island, this group of marine animals had perished one hundred years ago, so fur traders could not have a role in this extinction.
