Both of the reading and lecture are about the cane toad. This species is applied in Australia in 1935 for protecting farmers' products in cope with harmful insects. However, now the extreme growth of the cane toad cannot be stopped. The reading provides three methods to be prevented from the spread of the cane toad. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that constructing a national fence can be more effective in this way because this approach have already used for the population of rabbits and it was successful. This point is challenged by the professor. She claims that the cane toads' eggs and even young can toads would find in the rivers and streams; consequently, building a fence will not be practical because the stream of water is able to transfer this species to other areas.
Secondly, the article contends that government should create a campaign of volunteers; therefore, these people can catch the young cane toad with hand and also can destroy the mentioned species’ eggs; in the contrast, the professor claims that untrained volunteers may create the worse condition and even they can harm other species. She elaborates on this by mentioning that it is very formidable for untrained volunteers to discern a frog from the cane toad particularly when the cane toad is young.
Finally, the reading passage states that introducing a virus can manage the cane toad's population. The aforementioned virus will not harm to reptile and amphibian which have been infected and it just destroys the cane toad. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. She expresses that Australian reptiles and amphibians are usually transferred to other countries like America; subsequently, when these species enter to The United State, they will harm to Native American cane toads that are crucial species in the American wild, so this approach can create negative impacts on ecosystem.
