The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010
The pie charts illustrate how the preferred second languages of British student changed between 2000 and 2010.
Generally speaking, while list of languages still remained identical over a decade, there were a number of changes in their relative popularity in two years given.
It is clearly that students who speak English only, by some way accounted for the largest part in both years, around a third of total percentage. Meanwhile, the opposite way was observed by who can speak German made up for only 10% and unchanged in the same two years.
Among the less popular languages, the most notable development was that the proportion of students who can speak another languages except from Spanish, German and French, making it become the second largest part in the popularity with 20% in 2010. Likewise, the number of student speaking more than two other languages also increased with small proportion by 5% from to 15% in 2010. In stark contrast, around a half of the 20% of United Kingdom students who can speak Spanish dropped significantly in 2010. Whilst, the number of French speaker in England move downward slightly from 15% to 10% after a decade.
