Farmers within a country are often protected by tariffs - that is, special taxes on imported food. Such policies are necessary, and should be implemented wherever possible.
To what extent do you agree with this?
Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Agriculture is the backbone for a economy for numerous countries. Special privileges are provided to farmers for their contribution to the economy. Numerous points and have been illustrated to support such actions by the government.
Firstly, a farmer invests his money, time and efforts to gain profit. Moreover their contribution towards the society helps in the development of economy and the population as well. Furthermore special tax rebates are available to such farming community to encourage the growth of certain products that are greatly in demand. In addition loans that were procured by such farmers were nullified as a reward. For instance, last month Indian government had reduced the rate of interest for the farmers.
Secondly, in order to encourage the preference of produced produced in the country additional tax is levied on imported goods. Not only will it boost the sales of locally made items but also keep the foreign companies flooding the local market with their goods at bay. People prefer imported goods to that which is locally produced, because of the quality . Government should take initiatives to change people's perception. For example, Bali is one such location where foreign goods are in greater demand to local goods. Though the economy would receive money through imports and sales tax, the local community have been deprived from their livelihood.
To put it in a nutshell, it is upto the government and the people who live there to give preference to local produce rather than imported goods. This will be helpful for the economy as well.
