The pie graphs indicate the proportion of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions of households in Australia.
It is clear that Heating requires the most significant percentage of energy (42%), which is approximately three times as large as its emissions of greenhouse gas (15%). By comparison, the greatest emitter of greenhouse gas is water heating, which produces 32% of gas. On the other hand, cooling consumes 2% of household energy, similar to the greenhouse gas it emits (3%), accounting for the smallest proportion in both charts.
We can see from the charts that the energy use of lighting (4%), refrigeration (7%) and other appliances (15%) is around half of their gas emissions, which are 8%, 14% and 28% respectively.
Overall, heating uses the most energy in Australian households, whilst water heating emits the largest proportion of greenhouse gas. By contrast, cooling consumes the least energy and results in the smallest percentage of gas.
