The two pie charts given side by side disclose how people in Europe changed their preferences for recreations over the period from 1985 to 1995.
In 1985, watching TV was obviously the most preferred pastime while Other was chosen the least favored. Interestingly, with a decade passing by, European people seemed to remain the way they spent spare time: Watching TV still ranked top and Other received the least popularity. Meanwhile, a new genre of recreation—Playing Computer Games—appeared in the survey of 1995 with a rather large portion and ranked the second favorite spare-time activity.
In the survey of 1985, the leisure activity done by the greatest portion of European residents, namely, Watching TV, accounted for 32 percent, followed by 23% for Eating Out, 21% for Talking with Friends, 18 percent for Talking with Family, and 6% for Other. Although undergoing a slight reduction of 2% in adoration ten years later, it remained at top with 30 percent in the 1995 poll while rank shift happened among other activities.
Relaxation choices categorized into Other was the least favorite, having a humble share of 6% in 1985. Likewise, in the questionnaire conducted in 1995, this group once again lay at the bottom with a decline, dropping to 2 percent. One thing noticeable is that, Playing Computer Games won Second Place with 27% as a new attraction in the Europeans’ lives.
