The average of individual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in several European countries from 1967 to 2007 is elucidated in the graph.
In general, while the emissions in Italy and Portugal underwent an upward trend, the ones in the UK and Sweden showed the reverse. The lowest emission found in Portugal and Sweden eventually.
From 1967 to 1987, emissions per person in Portugal and Italy increased by around 3 metric tonnes, while the one in Sweden dipped steeply by almost half after peaking at 11. The UK experienced a slight downfall in the individual emission produced in the UK by only 1 metric tonne, and a huge gap is shown by approximately 4 metric tonnes.
In the next 20 years, the emission produced in Portugal and Italy continued to rise by approximately 2 metric tonnes, the latter surpassing emissions in Sweden. Whereas a plunge was seen in Sweden to below 6 metric tonnes, the lowest also with Portugal. Despite continuing to decline moderately, the UK remained at the top country producing emissions at the end of the period.
