The graph below shows the changes in the maximum number of Asian
elephants between 1994 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
The bar chart illustrates the comparison between two years 1997 and 2004, in nine countries: Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and China in terms of the maximum number of Asian elephants. Overall, it can be noticed that the elephant population in 2004 was fewer than in 1997. Also, India remained as the country with the highest number of mammals, whereas China contained the least number of elephants in all two years that were mentioned before.
To begin with, the number of elephants in India was still far higher than in any other country, although there was a dramatic decline from just below 10,000 in 1997 to 7,500 in 2004. Malaysia and Thailand are the two countries where elephant numbers have decreased by half the figure in 1997 and dropped as low as 1,000. China followed the same trend and in 2004, it had the lowest number at nearly 500.
On the contrary, although the trend was downward in numerous nations, elephant populations in Vietnam and Laos remained stable, at approximately 1,200. Similarly, Sri Lanka and Myanmar also shared a common pattern of quite small fluctuations, from 2,500 in 1997 to 2,000 in 2004 in Sri Lanka, and from 5,000 in 1997 to 4,500 in 2004 in Myanmar, respectively. Myanmar was in the second-highest position regarding the number was almost half of the number of India's elephant population. It can easily be seen that the only country where elephants showed signs of recovering was Cambodia, where numbers may have risen by up to 200.
