Essay topics:

The line graph below shows the population size, birth and death rate of England and Wales from 1700 to 2000.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph illustrates the total population as well as the natality rate and the mortality rate in two countries, both of which belong to the UK, namely England and Wales. from 1700 to 2000. Overall, it can be clearly seen that the population in England and Wales witnessed an upward trend, whilst the birth and death rates followed a fluctuating trend. Additionally, the birth ratio was constantly higher than the figure for fatalities over the period given.

The data indicates that from 1700 to 1750, the birth rate and the death rate were similar, rising from 30 to 40 per 1,000 citizens for the birth rate and from 26 to 37 per 1,000 people for the death rate. Both of these proportions remained stable from 1750 to 1800. After 1800, a sharp decline could be seen in both two ratios; these proportions hit their lowest point in 1950, at approximately 22 per 1000 inhabitants for the natality rate and 20 per 1000 people for the figure of fatalities. The death rate remained stable from 1950 to 2000. However, the birth rate recovered to 32 per 1,000 people, the same as in 1900, and then reached its highest point at 35 per 1,000 people in 2000.

Furthermore, the population of England and Wales started with only 5 million in 1700 and grew to 10 million in 1750. From 1750 to 1800, the populations of both countries decreased by 4 million. Nonetheless, a skyrocketing trend in these countries' populations could be observed from 1800 onwards, constituting 45 million people in 1950 and finally achieving a peak of 50 million people.
