The line chart compares and contrasts information on the changes in the pollution concentrations of two gases namely smoke and sulfur dioxide in London, over a four-century period of time, measured by micrograms per cubic metre.
Generally speaking, despite fluctuations, the concentration of two pollutants ended unchanged through the same interval of time.
A closer look at the diagram shows a slight increase in the concentration of smoke at roughly 250 micrograms per cubic metre which was only less than one-third of the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the first century. Both categories experienced a gradual fall in the next 25 years, followed by a significant upward trend and reached their peaks at 400 and 900 in 1825 and 1800 respectively. However, after hitting its peak at 550 micrograms per cubic metre in 1930, the amount of sulfur dioxide had a tendency of falling, followed by a stability at 250 through 25 years. On the other hand, 1950 witnessed the lowest point for smoke in 1940, then fell to approximately the same as that of sulfur dioxide in the last 60 years.
