Over the next ten years, there was a moderate increase in the figure of the average carbon dioxide emissions per person in Sweden to approximately 11 tonnes, followed by a dramatic fall to roughly six tonnes in 2007. Meanwhile, throughout the same 40-year period, the figure for the UK experienced a gradual decline to nearly nine tonnes.
Turning to the statistics for Italy and Portugal, they came in third and fourth place in 1967, with approximately four and one tonnes. During the next period of 40 years, figures for Italy showed a sharp rise to roughly eight tonnes in 2007. Likewise, the statistics for Portugal witnessed a steep growth to more than five tonnes.
