The number of cases of whooping cough before and after vaccination
The line graphs compare the rate and effects of vaccination on young children for whooping cough in Britain, over a half-century between 1940 and 1990.
In general, it is clear that a significant decrease in cases reported is seen after vaccinating children. However, cases depend on the rate of vaccination for the respective period.
Looking at the figures, prior to vaccination cases registered began with the highest at nearly above 175,000, followed up by a drop in 1945, before soaring again to 170,000 in the first half of the 1950s.
On the other hand, when the vaccine was introduced in around 1956, cases dropped dramatically to just above 20,000 in 1975 with 81% of children being vaccinated. While the data saw an upsurge in cases reported to above 60,000 between 1975 and 1985, as the rate of medication was reduced to 31%. However, it plunged to nearly a flat line, around hundreds with an increasing percentage of vaccination to 94, and remain stable until the end.
