A glance at the table provided reveals how many male and female workers as well as factories there were in England and Wales during the 1851-1901 period.
In 1851, there were only 225 factories with 447,100 total employees, after a decade, the number of total employees almost halved to 291,780 while the number of factories showed a slight increase to 227. In 1871, total number of workers and that of factories witnessed dramatic changes, number of total employees continued to decrease just over its half and number of factories rose considerably to 622. However, it is interesting to note that the quantity of factories peaked 721in 1881 before declining gradually to 600 at the end of the period. Whereas, the figure for total employees went down to 30,000 in 1901.
Overall, the largest number of males and females were employed at the beginning of the period, and both male workers and female workers experienced a fall throughout period. While the number of factories generally rose.
