The table below gives information on visitor statistics for 1996, 1998 and 2000 for various World Heritage sites in Australia

The given table illustrates the numbers of travellers in 6 different World Heritage destinations in Australia between 1996 and 2000.

It is clear that the figures for Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and Macquarie Island decreased, while there were increases in the numbers of visitors in the remaining sites. Moreover, the Great Barrier Reef was the most attractive tourist destination during the period shown.

In 1996, the Great Barrier Reef had 1,670,000 guests, and this value then doubled and reached a peak at 3,200,000 in 2000. Similarly, there were significantly lower numbers of those who paid visits to Blue Mountains and Tasmania Wilderness in the first year of the period, at 526,000 and 450,000, respectively. In addition, while the statistics of Tasmania Wilderness rose gradually by 33,000, that of Blue Mountains had a greater growth of 55,000 at the end of the period.

By contrast, Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve held the second highest position during the time frame, although this site witnessed a marginal drop in its figure from 810,000 to 770,000. On that same note, Macquarie Island was the least favourable destination over a 4-year period, having only 350 travellers at the beginning and its number even hit a bottom after 2 years. Moreover, Shark Bay saw a small gain to 102,000 in its figure in 1998, but this then went down and maintained its second lowest position since the beginning.
