The table below gives information on visitor statistics for 1996, 1998 and 2000 for various World Heritage sites in Australia
The table shows data about the amount of visitors paying a visit to six different World Heritage sites in Australia in three years 1996,1998,2000
As can be inferred from the table, it is apparent that the majority of tourists spent their time visiting Great Barrier Reef, with the number far surpassing other categories . It is also worth noting that the figures for Great Barrier Reef, Blue Mountains and Tasmania Wilderness witnessed dramatic growth, in contrast to a constant drop in the number of visitors coming to Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve.
In 1996, Great Barrier Reef welcomed 1,670,000 visitors. This figure then increased considerably and reached its peak at 3,200,000 people in 2000, which was the highest number among 6 heritage sites examined. Meanwhile, a minimal growth was seen in the number of tourists visiting Blue Mountains and Wilderness between 1996 and 2000, 55,000 and 33,000 people, respectively.
Conversely, the amount of people going to Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve decreased noticeably, from 810,000 in 1996 to 770,000 people in 2000. A similar pattern was seen in the statistics for visitors in Shark Bay. On the other hand, the amount of visitors in Macquarie Island observed a drop from 350 to 310 people in 1998, followed by a slight rise in 2020.
