The table compares information about how many visitors came British by airplane at three main airports from 1998 to 2003.
It is clear that there was considerable upward trend in the number of visitors of both Gatwisk airport and Stansted airport while Heathrow experienced a slight decrease over the period.
In 1998, Heathrow airport stood at 27.2 million, then there was a significant increase in the number of visitors until reaching a peak in the next two years, at 48.2 million. Similarly, Gatwisk airport and Stansted airport also witnessed a remarkable increase at that time with 44.4 million and 39.9 million, respectively.
In 2001, the figure for Heathrow airport went down considerably at which point it levelled off at 33.2 million before increasing considerably again in 2003, with 45.6 million. In contrast, the number of visitors came Gratwisk airport went up steadily in the two following years, with 69.3 million, whereas Stansted airport remained stable in the last three years, at 43.3 million.
