The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
*Fairtrade: a category of products for which farmers from developing countries have been paid an officially agreed fair price.
The two tables show the sale amounts of coffee and bananas which were fairtrade-labeled between 1999 and 2004 over UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
This five year-period witness an upward trend in terms of the coffee sales. The most considerable increase could be seen in UK, rising more than ten times from 1.5 to 20, becoming the highest one in 2004, while the sales rose moderately from 3 and 1 to 6 and 1.7 respectively in Switzerland and Belgium. And there was a slight rise in both Denmark and Sweden, increasing to 2 and 1 in the end.
When it comes to Bananas, Switzerland kept its first situation with an overwhelming increase, which was rising from 15 to 47 as opposed to UK and Belgium, which rose to 5.5 and 4 but still considerably less than that in Switzerland. Conversely, there was a mild decrease in Sweden, falling from 1.8 to 1, as well as in Denmark, a similar trend can be seen, decreasing from 2 to 0.9 mildly.
Overall, from the data we can see, the fairtrade-labeled coffee soared in these years, especially in UK. There was a different trend in the sales of bananas that the Switzerland occupied the most amount in this period.
