Employers sometimes ask people applying for jobs for personal information such as their hobbies and interests, and whether they are married or single. Some people say that this information may be relevant and useful. others disagree.
Discuss both views and you opinion.

During interviews employers ask a lot of questions some of which may be relevant to the job like educational background and professional experience, while other questions might be more personal in nature like their hobbies, interests, etc. While some people feel that asking personal information may be irrelevant and not useful, others disagree. In my opinion, asking questions about a person's interests helps in getting a better understanding about their passion, likes and dislikes.

Firstly, people are not comfortable discussing their personal life with a stranger, since these days people are very quick in passing a judgement, and during an interview the major focus should be on the job. Many people are of the belief that personal and professional life should be kept seperate and what a person does in his spare time should be a private affair. Secondly, some employers discriminate people on the basis of gender, maritial status, etc. For instance, many companies do not prefer hiring married women as they feel they are more focused on balancing their family life and won't completely commit to the jobs.

On the contrary, asking these questions gives the employer a clear understanding about the character of the person they are going to hire. Moreover, if many employees have the same interests, they can provide a platform to showcase their skills. For example, conducting an inter-department sports competition or providing library facilities to further develope their knowledge. Lastly, some people are very passionate about their hobbies and love to talk about it, thus giving the employer an idea of their background.

Keeping all the above points in mind, asking personal questions not only gives perspective to the employer, but the interviewee also feels good that the interview not purely technical and the company is taking an interest in his life. Although, there are some drawbacks of providing too much personal information, the pros outweigh the cons.
