Some people believe that children can learn effectively by watching TV and they should be encouraged to watch TV both at home and at school. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
It is true that studying from a TV programme can help studen gain knowledge more easily, young adults should watch TV frequently. While I accept that watching TV can be a good resource for children to study, I believe that spending too much time sitting in front of the TV is not healthy.
On the one hand, using TV programmes as a teaching material is a modern and effective approach to education. For the learner, it would be easier to memorise things and more interesting due to the connection of images and sound.
For example, there are only words and pictures in school textbooks which makes students feel bored compared to watching documentaries and historical films etc.
On the other hand, I believe that watching TV too often can bring a negative influence on child’s development. Firstly, not every TV channel would be useful. For instance, violence is readily found in movies and disturbing topics are often reported on the news. Children can easily imitate what they see on screen. Secondly, most exams are focused on academic subjects. If students had to learn everything from watching TV and not putting what they learn into practical use, writing for example, it would lead to bad exam results. Finally, children would be less healthy. They would spend far too much time focusing on an electronic screen for learning and these products are harmful to the eyes when used for long periods.
In conclusion, while watching TV is a beneficial way of gaining an education, I do not agree that spending a lot of time in front of a TV is helpful for children.
