Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Distance learning has been a growing trend in recent years. The online courses offered by well-esteemed universities are getting increasingly popular. Despite a few drawbacks which may incur when learning online, I believe it is a constructive approach.
If we consider the negatives, one of the main concern about distance learning would be the effectiveness. To explain more, students are solely depending on themselves while learning as there are no team or friends to discuss or work together. For example, when any doubts arise, learners don't have many options to clear those. Online explanations from support-groups or the lecturer would not be sufficient in many cases. Moreover, face-to-face question asking and discussions are not possible when learning online. In fact, it is not rare that pupils get bored after sometimes because there is very less interaction during the lectures. Whereas physically delivered classes are more engaging and live. Which, I believe, is essential when learning.
On the other hand, these virtual classes are providing an exponential amount of valuable courses. For instance, one can learn from arts to advance science from many reputed universities for a very reasonable fee. In contrast, enrollment requirements and cost of traditional courses of such subjects would be not affordable for many. Moreover, nowadays, people tend to gain more knowledge about various subjects because there is high demand for knowledge-workers. Especially, if we consider the Information Technology industry, many individuals follow online courses and obtain their degrees online in order to get jobs and necessary qualifications. As a matter of fact, it is worth mention that many enterprises are hiring such people despite the way they acquire their talents.
To recapitulate, although there some negatives of online courses due to lack of peer support and attention, the positives are tremendously beneficial in terms of getting knowledge and recognised qualifications.
