It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts
The primary goal of education is to train students to face the real world prudently and facts alone cannot fulfill this goal as facts merely test an individual's memory. Therefore, I agree with the statement that it is essential for students to fathom ideas and concepts rather than to learn facts.
As stated above, facts are information that are true. While, it is essential to learn facts in order to make prudent decisions, they alone cannot prepare a student for real world. For example, history is a subject with a myriad number of facts but the primary goal of this subject is to teach students, the errors and mistakes that people did in the past times and make students contemplate the consequences of certain decisions taken by the people in the past times. Therefore, the subject of history can be effectively taught to students when there are number of facts combined with concepts and ideas behind it.
Ideas and concepts improve an individual's cognitive abilities as concepts often have to be paired with ingenuity to completely understand them. For example, newton's laws in text books are theoretical but to completely understand it an individual tries to apply this in the real world and hence, understanding a concept involves ingenuity, there by increasing a person's cognitive abilities.
Hence, the above points stated elucidates the statement that it is important for students to understand ideas and concepts than learning facts.
