several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors.
The reading and the lecture are both about several behaviors of elephants. The professor is skeptical about the idea of the reading that people have several beliefs about the elephants. The professor argues that these beliefs are based on misunderstandings of elephants.
Firstly, the reading suggests that old elephants know when they are going to death. However, the professor says that it's not because elephants are aware of their death. The ture reason is that old elephants' teeth are bad and they could not chew hard food. They have to leave the herds and look for soft vegetations. Moreover, soft vegetations are usually near water, so old elephants die there and form a elephant graveyard. Obviously, the professor disproves its counterpart in the reading.
Furthermore, the professor is opposite to the reading's idea that elephants have artistic ability. The professor states that people train elephants to draw pictures. People teach elephants to paint in a certain way and elephants remember some patterns. In addition, people control elephants to draw different matters by toughing their ears. Elephants don't know the pictures are flowers or other things. In this way, the professor opposes the second opinion of the reading.
Finally, the reading claims that elephants are afraid of mice. On the contrary, the professor states that elephants have a fear of unfamiliar animals. It normal that animals are afraid of unfamiliar ones. For example, elephants in a zoo are not afraid of mice. If elephants are familiar with mice, they will not mind mice any more. Thus, the professor controdicts the last claim of the reading.
In conclusion, the professor clearly identidies the weaknesses in the reading and convincingly shows that the central argument in the reading is incorrect.
