TOEFL TPO 26 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage suggests that the zebra mussel has been spread out to North America, which is believed to be a reason of the threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America. The professor, however, casts some doubts on the given reasons and mentions that they can control their spread in the waters and it would not be a threat for fish population as it was in the past.
To begin with, the reading passage claims that spreading the zebra mussel by ship is a significant evidence to confirm that it would colonize all of the North America with the mentioned species. However, the professor refutes the idea and elaborates that there are effective ways to stop ships to transport mussels to the new location. For instance, the ships should be required to empty out the ballast water while it is still in Europe and fill-in ocean water before entering North America. The salty water of ocean might kill all the mussels.
Moreover, the author of the reading passage believes that when the mussels reach out to a new area they have a great chance to dominate it. On the contrary, the professor rebuts the given reason and thinks that mussels can dominate the new location for a short period. The professor explains that in Europe local birds found mussels as new food and switch their eating habits.
Finally, the reading passage puts forward that zebra mussels might decrease the fish population in their new habitat area as they eat planktons, which means they have to compete with other species in order to survive. The professor retorts the mentioned reason claiming that even though they have negative impact on other fish species but they also have positive benefits for other fish species. For example, the mussels produce nutrients for the bottom-feeding fish and this would increase their population.
