TPO 30: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
according to some ancient historians, the greek defended themselves with a creative weapon called a "burning mirror when the roman navy attacked them.according to the passage, there are several reasons which shows that the burning mirror weapon is just a myth and presents few reaons. The speaker however, told that the claim about the weapon is true and stated that the points mentioned in the passage are not convincing.
First, according to the passage the greeks were not technologically advanced enough to made mirror in specific parabolic curvature to make it works. The speaker stated that, to make the device the greeks did not need single copper sheet but several pieces of copper sheets. these pieces can easily be arrange into parabolic cuvature shape. Therefore, to make the burning mirror the greeks did not need advanced technology.
second, as passage stated that the burning mirror required long time to set a ship on fire from the results shown by experiment. however, speaker stated that these experiments results are based on the ship made of wood but the actual roman ship was not only made of wood. it contain other materials like a sticky substance called pitch, which burns within seconds and spread to the wood even if the ship is moving. Consequently, the weapon is very effective and practical for the attcked on a moving ship.
Finally, passage compare the burning mirror with flaming arrow, as the flaming arrows are as effective as the burning mirror. The speaker stated otherwise. The flaming arrows can b eeasily seen by the romans when they were aimed. however, burning mirror cannot be seen as it is just appear as mirror when the sun rays fall on mirror it appears more surprising and more effective than arrow.
