The passage proposes that astroids can be utilized for colonization purposes and it suggests some reasons to support its claim. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that this idea is not very practical and he further brings up some counter claims to refute all of the rationales that are proposed by the passage.
First, the passage discusses that the low gravity of astroids can be manipulated to make the processes of landing and taking-off easier and softer. The auther further mentions that by this mean, space crafts can carry much more equipments and less fuel. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the fact that low gravity condition can cause serious problems to astronauts such as losing muscle and bone density. he then brings up the example of the problems that happend for astronauts in short-term low-gravity condition and mentions that these problems will be much more severe in long-term colonization of astroids.
Second, the auther suggests that some astroids are rich in valuable minerals such as gold and platinum which can be braught back to earth to compensate the high costs of this space trip. In contrast, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by highlighting the enourmous costs of transportation of these minerals back to earth. Additionally, he mentions that by bringing these minerals, their supply will be increased and as a consequence, their price will be lowered.
Finally, the passage underlines the idea that astroids are easy to reach and therefore, it is more easier and affordable to get to and get back from them. The lecturer in contrary, mentions that astroids usually do not have an usual orbiting pattern. He further discusses that maybe astroids get close enough to earth for landing on them but they might get far away from earth, even farther than Mars, and this incident will make the process of coming back from them difficult.
