TPO14 integrated writing: Salvage logging
The author maintains that salvage logging is advantageous to damaged forest and to the local economy, however, the lecturer disagrees with it for several reasons.
First, while the author contends that salvage logging will create more spaces for new plants to grow and will benefit the environment, the lecturer argues that eliminating the rotting tree materials will not only remove the substances which are good to the growth of trees but also deprived the soil of nutrients that are essential to trees.
Second, the author claims that cleaning up the dead trees will help eliminating the bad insects, however, the lecturer says that salvage logging will indiscriminally wipe out the bad insects as well as some good insects and birds which are beneficial to the health of the forest.
Third, the lecturer points out the fact that salvage logging will actually bring little economic profits to industries because expensive helicoptors and viechles are needed to collect the dead woods which might still be useful. Also, the jobs provided are not permenent and local people will not get the jobs because they are not so well trained and experienced compared to outsiders.
