The graph below shows the changes in maximum number of Asian elephants between 1994 and 2007.
The bar graph illustrates the estimated maximum population of elephants in a range of Asian countries in both 1997 and 2004.
In most of countries, the population for elephants fell amongst projected periods. The most interestingly, Malaysian elephant and Thailand elephant plunged in its population more than half the figure in 1997. In the former, the number of elephants dropped as low as 1000. Indian, on the other hand, remained the same as the largest population for elephants, but experienced of a dramatic fall in numbers so that in 2004, the number reached at 7500. The smallest population was China, as witnessed from the graph, its size was as small as 1000 elephants in 1997 and it dropped in half to as few as 500 elephants by 2004.
Although the trend is downward in overall, elephant populations were remained stable in Vietnam and Laos at approximately 1000. The only country where it shows a recovery trend in population in elephants was Cambodia where number has risen to around 1200.
