The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The two charts illustrate the number of marriages and divorces in a 30-year period and the percentage of marital statuses of adults in two specific years, 1970 and 2000. These figures were recorded in the USA.
It is clear that the number of marriages was much higher than that of divorces in the period. Meanwhile, married adults occupied the largest percentage in both years.
There were 2.5 million marriages in 1970 and this figure remained stable in the next 10 years followed by a gradual decrease in the last two decades to 2 million in 2000. The number of divorces hit a peak at nearly 1.5 million in 1980 and fluctuated around 1 million in other years.
After 30 years, the percentage of married adults experienced a slight drop, decreasing from 70% in 1970 to under 60% in 2000. That of the adults who never get married rose over the period, with an increase of only 5%. The widowed and the divorced saw an opposite trend with the percentage was under 10% in two years.
