Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary's claim. First, the National Geographic Society put together a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary's records and equipment. At the end of the investigation, the committee concluded that Peary's accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole. Second, a recent expedition provides support for Peary's claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. Skeptics used to argue that Peary could not have traveled that fast, since even modern snowmobiles take longer to cover the same distance. However, a British explorer named Tom Avery recently made the same trek in less than 37 days. In fact, Avery used the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had. Thus, Peary's claims are not impossible, and he very well might have been telling the truth. Third, there are photographs taken by Peary that support his claim to have reached the North Pole. Measuring the shadows in Peary's photographs makes it possible to calculate the Surf s position in the sun. The Surf s position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Surf s position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. This provides strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and took the photographs there.

However, the professor in the lecture refutes those assumptions and avers that all of the rationals are not convincing to prove that Peary were reached North pole.

First of all, the reading states that since a committee from National Geographic Society checked and declared that Peary had reached the North pole, so it's true. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this point by claiming that this assessment was bias, and it had done by providing a lot of money. Moreover, the examination was held within two days, and did not check every document clearly. Therefore, people should not rely on the report published by National Geographic Society.

Secondly, the writer analogies Peary journey with Tom Avery travel to the the north pole to justify the point that it was impossible to reach the North Pole in only 37 days. Since Avery's dogsled was very similar to Peary's a dogsled and Avery able to reach that position in less than 37 days, it's not impossible for Peary to went there within the same time period. On the contrary, the professor Provides two important discriminations between Peary and Avery. The first one is that unlike Peary, Avery had not carry foods since his food was provided from an airplane. The second difference is the weather conditions; Avery traveled in a good weather condition; however, Peary had not such amiable weather condition to reach so quickly.

Finally, the reading claims that since the analysis of photographs captured by Peary indicated a location in the North pole, it's true that Peary reached and took photographs from that location. However, the professor proves it as a false assumption by saying that Peary's chemora was very old style and did not able to capture clearly any picture which is one of the important parameter to analogy photographs to identify the location. He also avers that most of the pictures were faded and did not provide clear sunlight indication which need to assessment it. Therefore, photographs couldn't clarify his journey.
