The reading passage embraces the idea that there are several major theories, described how a huge marine animal called sea cow extinct in Siberia. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some pieces of evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that overhunting by native Siberia may have been the main cause of extinction due to the fact that people largely relied on sea cows as a food source. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that sea cows were massive creature around ten tons, which could feed human beings for a couple of months. But the population in that time was not so large to hunt sea cow lavishly.
The author also holds the view that the ecosystem disturbance played a key role in the extinction owing to the fact that it caused the population of kelp, the major food of sea cow to diminish drastically. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that if something really happened, it would have effects on other parts of the ecosystem. In fact, other marine mammals like whale did not have any problem because there was no evidence to report the problem in the ecosystem.
Finally, as set forth by the author it seems reasonable that European traders hunted sea cows in a large number because of valuable fur. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that sea cows have been extinct long before European arrival. Also, when they arrived, the population of sea cows was not large in number. So, this could not be reasonable.
Having scrutinized all the ideas offered by the author, there are pieces of evidence having been ignored by the author while the answer of which could strengthen the author's claim.
