The reading and the lecture are both about the pros and cons of let it burn policy in the United States. The author of the reading believes that it is not beneficial for the policy to be used, due to, the damage is extensive Yellowstone was burnt for over 2 months and spread across 800,000 acres of land. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that the damage in Yellowstone caused park trees and other vegetation to died out. The author mentioned that majority of the area was scorched by the fire, thus smaller plants also was affected. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the area that was scorched by fire was easily being replaced by new species of plants. Furthermore, He argues that in this drastic incident something better happened in it's vegetation, it become more diverse and other species of plants grew.
Secondly, the author contends that wildlife was greatly affected, hence, animals such as deer and elk seen escaping the fire, whereas smaller species didn't escape at all. The articles notes that the destruction of ecosystem could greatly affect everyone on the food chain. Nevertheless, the author rebuts this argument. He suggests that different species of seed would not generate if it not because of the great fire that happened in 1988, thus, this new species need great source of heat in order to grow and blossom. He elaborates on this by mentioning that animals easily recover and small plants abundantly grow in the area, as a result, small animals such as rabbits are seen and predators also become apparent, so, the food chance becomes more stronger.
Finally, the author states that the the tourist destination in the park suffered, thus, the tourism in the area declined. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that tourist still supports the park. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that there are few rainfall and strong winds that occurs after the fire, as a result, more visitors flock the park area yearly.
