International migration in UK
The chart below illustrates information about international immigration in UK.
All period from 1999 to 2008 both immigration and emigration experienced an upward trend, but the figures of immigration were dramatically higher. Net migration fluctuated widely and peaked in 2007.
In 1999 about 450,000 people came to live in UK, while approximately 300,000 decided to leave the country. Then both trends flattened out at about under 500,000 and slightly more than 300,000 people. The figure for net migration was around 160,000 at first. Following this, numbers gradually increased. There were a pick of net migration at 250,000 in 2004, which was followed by steady decline.
After 2004, rate of immigration remained high, while emigration number fluctuated. It dropped sharply in 2007, before peaking at about 420,000 people in 2008. Consequently, net migration rose at around 240,000 in 2007, but bounce back to 160,000 in 2008.
