They say you are what you wear, and in Bolivia, that's especially true. Clothes are political there. For a long time, the indigenous Aymara peolple faced discrimination from their European leaders. The prejudice hasn't disappeared but there is more of a move for indigenous people to reclaim their heritage.
Indigenous Aymara people wear typical clothes that became to be very expensive. actually, comparing the price, a typical Aymara hat has almost the same price value as three casual Brazilian clothes like a pair of pants, a t-shirt, and a sweater.
In addition to this information, local people make some famous show competition to demonstrate the elegance, the colorful and the importance of this kind of clothes, and of course, because of marketing issues.
However, most of local indigenous do not wear their typical clothes along the week; they only wear them when they go back home on weekends. this fact is because most of them feel discriminated. In contrast at the present, the actual government protect their rights in order to reduce discrimination. Actually, I believe they do not appreciate their origin as their ancestors used to do it before. Their love to their customs is fading away and they use the excuse of "discrimination" to cause controversy just because they want to catch the attention of authorities to get better political opportunities and to have better standard of life.
There are people that make big movements for indigenous, even most of the leaders are not real indigenous, that means all of their life were spent in a city; they take the chance to show companion and power inside the masses in order to use indigenous people to make them follow easily due the real facts, most of them do not have the chance to improve their knowledge to defend their rights.
As mentioned, typical clothes are used by indigenous and non indigenous to establish power and create big movements to get their individual benefits; most of them already lost the appreciation of their origin, so they just follow their leaders and it is not fair for a nation with distinct and important cultures.
